Reverse osmosis is capable of rejecting bacteria, salts, sugars, proteins, particles, dyes, and other constituents that have a molecular weight of greater than 150 – 250 Daltons. The separation of ions with reverse osmosis is aided by charged particles. This means that dissolved ions that carry a charge, such as salts, are more likely to be rejected by the membrane than those that are not charged, such as organics. The larger the charge and the larger the particle, the more likely it will be rejected.

Why WATER PROBLEMS are common nowdays ?

“Iron water” readily stains plumbing fixtures, porcelain and cooking utensils. When used in the laundry, it soon stains washables with reddish-brown discolorations. "Iron water" also leaves its telltale marks on walls and floors if used in doing home cleaning chores. Iron water also increases the hair fall and stickiness of hair.
“Iron water”, if not treated, can lead to serious complications in many industrial applications. In fact, there is hardly any wet process work that can be carried on successfully with water that contains iron.
Iron imparts a disagreeable metallic taste to water. Even when water contains small amounts of iron a disagreeable, somewhat astringent quality is apparent. Naturally when iron is present in detectable amounts, it can ruin the flavor of tea, coffee and alcoholic beverages. Further, the combination of soluble iron and certain of the constituents in the beverages gives them an unappetizing, inky black appearance.
The EPA Secondary Drinking Water Regulations recommend a maximum of 0.3 milligrams per liter (ppm) iron, as Fe, and a maximum of 0.05 mg/l (ppm) manganese, as Mn, because of the staining that higher concentrations can cause. In its insoluble forms iron can form deposits in pressure tanks, pipelines, water heaters, commodes and in any other equipment where water is used.
Iron problems, either alone or in combination with other troublesome water conditions.
Dissolved concentrations of iron in excess of 60 mg/l are known to exist. Usually, however, no more than 5 mg/l of iron are present in a water supply. Unfortunately, iron in water becomes a real source of trouble to the homemaker when as little as 0.3 mg/l is present, generally considered to be the minimum staining level in homes.
Water collects iron in several ways. Even as it falls through the air, water acquires small amounts of the oxides of iron found in the atmospheric dust. Water, rich in carbon dioxide, readily dissolves iron from the earth's plentiful deposits as it leaches these in its underground flow. This sink shows the results of iron staining. Not an eye-appealing sight! Water containing soluble iron is clear and colorless when drawn into the sink or tub. When it comes into contact with the air, the iron forms a gelatinous precipitate. The stains that result are extremely hard to remove. Witness this ruined your sink or bathtub.

Nature uses Membranes :

The coconut tree uses membranes in its roots to purify dirty ground water surrounding its roots, and sends up the purified water to fill its tender coconuts. Membranes are such good water purifiers, that it makes coconut water so sterile, that it can be injected directly into people, as an Intravenous Transfusion fluid in emergencies. (The intravenous use of coconut water: The American Journal of Emergency Medicine). During World War 2, many wounded American soldiers were saved in the Pacific War Zone battlefields, using raw tender coconut water as the drip plasma, the Intravenous Transfusion fluid.

What is RO ?

Reverse osmosis water filtration systems work by using high pressure to force water through a semi permeable membrane against the concentration gradient, from lower concentration to higher concentration. RO membranes are made of a thick polyamide film that contains tiny pores through which water can flow. RO Membrane element pore sizes can vary from 0.1 to 5,000 nanometers (nm) depending on application. The pores in the RO membrane are small enough to restrict organic compounds such as minerals and salt, but allow water molecules to pass through. RO systems are typically used to reduce the levels of total dissolved solids and suspended matter. The principal uses of reverse osmosis are for the reduction of high levels of nitrate, sulfate, sodium and total dissolved solids. RO units with carbon filters reduce the level of some SOCs (soluble organic compounds) like pesticides, dioxins and VOCs (volatile organic compounds like chloroform and petrochemicals). RO membranes are also porous and restrictive enough to filter out disease causing pathogens and bacteria from water.
Typically RO Membranes have an estimated life expectancy of about 2 years. There are many variables that come in to play in determining a RO membranes life expectancy such as feed water quality and amount of use. There are methods for cleaning a reverse osmosis membrane but often are not cost effective for residential RO systems.
All reverse osmosis membranes lose their performance and will foul over time. One of the primary reasons for RO membrane fouling is because of substances that deposit on the reverse osmosis membrane surface. The RO membrane elements can become fouled by suspended solids, microorganisms, and build up from mineral scale. Examples of suspended solids often found in feed water can include oil, silica, clay, iron, sulfur and acids. To increase the life of your RO membrane, it would be possible to reduce most suspended solids that cause a membrane to foul. Use a 5 micron carbon pre filter cartridge before the reverse osmosis membrane, this will help but may not completely remove all suspended solids that cause a RO membrane to foul.
RO removes most organic compounds and up to 99%++ of all ions. Effectiveness of RO units depends on initial levels of contamination and water pressure. RO treatment may be used to reduce the levels of: Naturally occurring substances that cause water supplies to be unhealthy or unappealing (foul tastes, smells or colors). Substances that have contaminated the water supply resulting in possible adverse health effects or decreased desirability.

How does R.O. works ?

Reverse Osmosis is the phenomenon of water flow through a semi-permeable Membrane that blocks the transport of salts or other solutes through it. Osmosis is a fundamental phenomenon in all-biological system. Osmosis is applied to water purification and other chemical laboratory and industrial processes. When a semi-permeable membrane separates two water volumes, water will flow from the side of low solute concentration. To the side of high solute concentration. The flow may be stopped or even reversed by applying external pressure on the side of higher concentration. This is called Reverse Osmosis (R.O.). Reverse Osmosis is only one stage of a typical R.O. system. Sediment and Carbonate filtration is normally included with an R.O. system, with each stage of filtration contributing to the purification process.

Isn’t water wasted by R.O. System ?

There is a significant percentage of water from the system that goes to the drain. This water is carrying away the impurities. These particles are too small to be caught by the filters. Reverse Osmosis has an automatic shut-off valve that shuts off the flow of water to the drain when the holding tank is full. This valve stops the R.O. system from continuously running water down the drain, thus conserving water as the R.O. system works according to usage.

Can this water be saved and used ?

Yes, most waste water today is recycled for golf courses and artificial lakes. The drain water is slightly higher in TDS concentration than the incoming water, but as R.O. does not added anything to the water. It can be used to water your lawn or garden.

What is TDS ?

TDS – Total Dissolved Solids
“Dissolved Solids” refer to any minerals, salt, metals, cat-ions on anions dissolved in water. This includes anything present in water other than H2O.
In general the total dissolved solid concentration is the sum of cat-ions (positively charged) and anions (negatively charged) ions in the water.
TDS in ppm (parts per million) usually ranges from) 0.5 to 1.0 times the electricity conductivity. The EPA Secondary Regulation advise a maximum contamination level (MCL) OF 500mg/liter (500 parts per million) ppm for TDS.
Ideal drinking water from RO, Microfiltration Deionization distillation is 0 – 50ppm. Often considered acceptable range for carbon filtration or mountain springs or aquifers are 50 – 140ppm, average tap water – 140 – 400ppm.
Total dissolved Solids (TDS) is directly related to the purity of water.

What is the importance of the water pressure to a R.O. system ?

It is the pressure of water that forces the water through the Membrane for purification and flushes the rejected solids away. Low water pressure will result in reduced production and premature fouling of the Membrane. The ideal pressure for operating an R.O. system is 60 PSI. Pressure below 40 PSI is generally considered insufficient and should be boosted using a pressure booster pump.

Will Iron hurt a Membrane ?

Yes, Iron will plug a R.O. Membrane, as the Membrane is not able to flush Iron out. Trace amounts of Iron (up to 2 ppm) can be removed by water softener. If the water contains 1 ppm or less, there is no need for concern. As the Membrane will usually last 1-2 years.

Can R.O. soften Water ?

Yes, R.O. water softened by the Reverse Osmosis purification process. However Hard Water (above 60-80 ppm) will shorten the life of the Membrane. The more hardness is feed water, the shorter the life of the Membrane.

What is UF ?

Ultra filtration (UF) is a variety of membrane filtration in which hydrostatic pressure forces a liquid against a semi permeable membrane. UF is used to remove essentially all colloidal particles (0.01 to 1.0 microns) from water and some of largest dissolved contaminants.

What is UV ?

UV - Ultra Violet water treatment systems designed to eliminate bacteria, virus, and cysts are available for residential and commercial.
Ultra Violet water filters are highly efficient at killing bacteria, viruses and other micro organisms that can be found in un-treated water.
The way they work is by passing water through a chamber which is flooded with Ultra Violet light.
The UV light shines powerfully through water passing along the unit, destroys the cell's DNA thereby neutralizing it.

Note : This refers to clear water Iron, not red Iron. The difference is that clear water Iron leaves no visible signs, whereas red Iron leaves a reddish brown discoloration in Toilet Bowls, Tanks, Sinks and Tube. If Iron is present, steps to remove the iron will have to be taken. Otherwise the warranty will be void.
